With Mel Gibson’s long-discussed sequel to The Passion of the Christ finally entering production in Rome, some major cast changes have leaked.
Reports confirmed over the weekend that Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in Gibson’s 2004 blockbuster, will not reprise his role in The Resurrection of the Christ, as was previously the plan. Likewise, Monica Bellucci, who portrayed Mary Magdalene, is also out.
Both roles are now being recast in Rome, with sources citing scheduling conflicts and the age of the actors—the original film was more than 20 years ago—as key reasons. The original plan, as announced by Gibson, was to use the original actors utilizing de-aging technology.
Caviezel also had openly discussed his return to the role on a podcast interview earlier this year. But the production is now moving forward without him.
The Resurrection of the Christ will be split into two films, with Part One scheduled for Good Friday, March 26, 2027 and Part Two slated for two months later: Ascension Day, May 6, 2027. Plot details are under wraps, although Gibson has hinted that the film will pick up 24 hours after Jesus’ death, covering the three days between his crucifixion and resurrection, and it will be “an acid trip.”
The original film was a major cultural event, grossing over $600 million worldwide and earning three Oscar nominations.
