Prayer Foundations

Understanding what prayer actually is and how it works

What Prayer Actually Is

Prayer, in its most fundamental definition, is communication between the human soul and God. Yet this clinical definition obscures the profound reality of prayer. Prayer is far more than mere communication; it is communion.

Prayer is the means through which:

  • The creature acknowledges the Creator
  • The finite reaches toward the infinite
  • The fallen seeks restoration

Biblical Terms for Prayer

Proseuchomai (προσεύχομαι)

The primary Greek word for prayer, emphasizing prayer as a posture of the soul turned toward God. It suggests submission, reverence, and sacred intention.

Deomai (δέομαι)

Indicating request, petition, or supplication. This word emphasizes the element of asking, of making specific requests known to God.

Entynchanō (ἐντυγχάνω)

Meaning to intercede, to make a request on behalf of another. This term emphasizes intercessory prayer and the representative function of prayer.

Eulogeo (εὐλογέω)

To speak well of, to bless. Prayer includes the dimension of blessing God, of speaking good things toward the Almighty.

The Trinitarian Foundation of Prayer

Authentic Christian prayer is thoroughly Trinitarian, engaging all three persons of the Godhead in distinct yet complementary ways:

Prayer to the Father

The normative pattern in Scripture is directed to God the Father. The fatherhood of God provides the relational basis for prayer.

"After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." - Matthew 6:9 (KJV)

Prayer Through the Son

All effective prayer depends upon Christ's mediatorial work. We approach the Father on the basis of Christ's righteousness, His sacrifice, and His intercession.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." - John 14:6 (KJV)

Prayer in the Holy Spirit

The Spirit is not merely the enabler of prayer but an active participant who intercedes within us with insight that transcends human articulation.

"The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." - Romans 8:26 (KJV)

The Character of God as Prayer Foundation

Effective prayer rests upon an accurate understanding of God's character. We cannot pray rightly to a God we do not truly know.

🔭

God's Omniscience

God knows all things—past, present, and future—exhaustively and simultaneously. Your prayer is not surprising to God.

God's Omnipotence

God possesses unlimited power. No circumstance exceeds His capacity. No problem is too large for His solution.

❤️

God's Benevolence

God is fundamentally good, concretely oriented toward human welfare. His nature inclines Him toward your good.

🛡️

God's Faithfulness

God keeps His promises. His word is reliable. His commitments endure. Prayer depends on His unchanging character.

God's Holiness

God is fundamentally separate from sin. Prayer requires alignment with His moral character.

The Purpose of Prayer

Many believers operate from confused purposes regarding prayer. Biblical prayer exists for multiple interconnected purposes:

Prayer as Alignment

The primary purpose is not to change God's mind but to align our minds and wills with His. Prayer transforms the one praying.

"O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt" - Matthew 26:39

Prayer as Partnership

Prayer is the means by which God invites humans to participate in His kingdom work. God chooses to accomplish His purposes through partnership with His people.

Prayer as Spiritual Warfare

Prayer is a primary mechanism through which believers engage in spiritual warfare, invoking God's power against spiritual opposition.

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers" - Ephesians 6:12

Prayer as Relationship

Fundamentally, prayer exists to deepen relationship with God. The relationship itself is the fruit, not just the answers we receive.

Prayer as Transformation

As we pray, we are inevitably transformed. Our character becomes more conformed to Christ, regardless of specific answers.

The Promises Attached to Prayer

Scripture contains numerous explicit promises regarding prayer. Understanding these promises protects you from discouragement and grounds your prayer practice in God's actual commitments:

1

The Promise of Access

Hebrews 4:15-16

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Access to God is not granted reluctantly. We come boldly—not with timidity—to the throne of grace.

2

The Promise of Hearing

1 John 5:14-15

If we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us... we know that we have the petitions.

God hears prayers aligned with His will. The promise extends beyond hearing—it declares the prayer is granted.

3

The Promise of Provision

Matthew 6:30-34

Your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

Believers need not be anxious regarding provision. God will provide for His children.

4

The Promise of Answered Prayer

Mark 11:24

What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Believe God has heard, has acted, and will bring the request to completion.

5

The Promise of Intercession

1 John 2:1-2

We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Christ continues to intercede for you. Your standing doesn't depend on perfect prayers but Christ's perfect intercession.
