You just made the most important decision of your life. Here's what happened, what to expect, and what to do right now.
If you just prayed to receive Christ—whether it was five minutes ago or five hours ago—something real happened. You may not feel different. You may feel incredibly different. Either way, here’s what just occurred:
According to the Bible, you have been forgiven of every sin—past, present, and future (Colossians 2:13-14). The Holy Spirit has come to live inside you (1 Corinthians 6:19). You have been adopted into God’s family (Romans 8:15). Your name has been written in the Book of Life (Revelation 21:27).
This is not something you can undo. It’s not something you have to earn. It’s done. You are saved. Period.
Some people feel overwhelming joy. Some feel peace for the first time in years. Some feel... nothing. All of these responses are normal.
Faith is not a feeling. It’s a decision backed by evidence and trust. Feelings will come and go—sometimes powerfully, sometimes quietly. Don’t judge the reality of your salvation by your emotions. Judge it by God’s promises.
If you feel doubt creeping in—“Did that really count? Did I say the right words? Am I really saved?”—that’s normal too. The enemy of your soul doesn’t want you to believe what just happened. But God’s word is more reliable than your feelings: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
Tell someone
Text a Christian friend. Call a family member. Post it on social media. Tell your spouse. The Bible says “confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:10)—telling someone makes it real and creates accountability.
Write it down
Open the notes app on your phone or grab a piece of paper. Write today’s date, what you prayed, and how you’re feeling. You’ll want to look back on this day.
Say thank you
Your second prayer doesn’t need to be complicated. Just say: “God, thank you. I don’t fully understand what just happened, but thank you. Help me understand more. Amen.”
Before bed tonight, read one chapter of the Bible. I recommend starting with the Gospel of John, chapter 1. It’s about 2 pages long. Read it slowly. Don’t worry about understanding everything—just read it.
Then pray again. It doesn’t have to be long. Something like:
“God, thank you for today. Thank you for saving me. I don’t know what tomorrow looks like, but I know You’re with me now. Help me learn more about You. Help me grow. Goodnight, Lord. Amen.”
When you wake up tomorrow, you’re still saved. Nothing that happens tonight can change that. Here’s what your first full day might look like:
Morning: Pray
Even 60 seconds. “God, thank you for a new day. Guide me today. Amen.”
Midday: Read
Read John chapter 2. That’s it. Two chapters in two days.
Evening: Reflect
Did you notice God today? Any moment of peace, clarity, or gratitude? That might be Him.
You don’t have to do all of these at once. But within the next week, try to:
Find a church
Google “bible-believing church near me.” Visit one this Sunday. You don’t have to commit—just go.
Get a Bible
If you don’t have one, download the free YouVersion Bible app or pick up a KJV Bible.
Connect with someone
Find one Christian who can answer your questions. This could be a friend, a pastor, or an online community.
Aim for one chapter of John per day. By next week, you’ll be seven chapters in.
You are not the same person you were before that prayer. You are a new creation in Christ. The road ahead won't always be easy, but you will never walk it alone.
From Kyle Lauriano:
“I remember my first 24 hours as a believer. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know who to tell. I didn't even know if what I was feeling was real. This guide is everything I wish someone had told me in those first hours. You just made the most important decision of your life—let me help you know what comes next.”
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
