Church Leadership Basics
Foundational Training for Emerging Leaders
Character Before Competency
Paul's leadership qualifications in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 focus overwhelmingly on character, not skill. A leader must be "blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach" (1 Timothy 3:2). This guide begins where Scripture begins — with the inner life of the leader before addressing what the leader does.
Servant-Leadership
Jesus redefined leadership: "whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister" (Matthew 20:26). Christian leadership is fundamentally different from worldly leadership. It is downward mobility — serving, sacrificing, and empowering others. This section explores Jesus' model, its practical implications, and how to resist the temptation to lead for status or control.
Core Competencies
While character is foundational, competency matters too. The guide covers essential leadership skills: vision casting, team building, delegation, conflict resolution, meeting facilitation, volunteer management, and basic organizational structure. Each skill is presented through a biblical lens with practical exercises.
